...well, sort of.
Both teams' names have interesting significance, one literary and one historical. Cool, huh? Apparently there are more than a few players on each team that DIDN'T know those connections. My goal: for you to be more knowledgeable.
Please answer the first two questions on a sheet of paper, to be turned in on Friday. Please answer the third question as a comment here on the blog.
This week, tell me (in at least 3 solid sentences per question):
1. Why are the Ravens called the Ravens? Be very specific.
2. Why are the 49ers called the 49ers? Be very specific.
3. If you could re-name the Panthers, what would you call them? Be creative, and remember to back up your reasoning with facts about our state.
I've included this graphic and poem I found for your enjoyment. There are some clues to get you started within the poem.

ReplyDeleteI would change the Panthers to Cougars because there the same thing and Cougars are in North Carolina
ReplyDeleteI would rename the Panthers the Charlotte Bankers because Charlotte is one of the largest cities in our state and they have a lot of banking industries.

ReplyDeleteI would rename the Panther's the Honey Bee's because the state insect is the Honey Bee and also we would be the first team to have the honey bee as our mascot.
ReplyDeleteI would name the panthers the cardinals because the cardinal is the state bird.
ReplyDeleteJaelyn reporting,
ReplyDeleteI would re-name the panthers to the Raleigh plott hounds because Raleigh is our state Capitol and because plott hounds are our state dog sooooooooo yay!!!
It's Aidan. I would call the Panthers the platypusses because I like platypusses and there aren't other teams called that.
ReplyDeleteThis Is Allie.
ReplyDeleteI would name the Panthers the Gold Bee's because they used to dig for A LOT of gold and the state insect is the honey bee.
Hey drew here, I would re-name the panthers the North Carolina Doughnuts. I'm saying this because I looked up on a website that krispy kreme doughnuts were first made here so yeah. Though it sounds like all the players are fat, it's still a cool name.
ReplyDeleteHi it's Posey,
ReplyDeleteIf I could reaname the panthers i would name them the fighting piolats. This besause we were the first state to have sucsessful air travle. Also having a agitive befor you name makes it that much cooler.
Hi, Caleb here. I would rename the Panthers The Lost Colonies of Football because NC is home to The Lost Colonies.
ReplyDeleteI would rename the Panthers the Dalmations because after are school.
ReplyDeleteGuys, I am EXTREMELY impressed with the creative names you developed. I can tell you are REALLY working to back up your opinions with strong reasoning too. I am very proud!
ReplyDeleteI have so many favorites that I cannot even pick one. They're all so great - and so clever! I think tomorrow we may take a little time to create mascots for the new team names and share them. By the way, Mr. Taylor's answer when I asked him was the Cougars, for exactly your reasoning, RJ. Also, I have some friends and family that follow the blog and there has been a great deal of response in support of the Doughnuts, Drew. I am a bit partial to the Gold Bees, since that references a cool connection to the 49ers - did you know there was a team in NC called the 49ers, too? Really, though ALL the ideas are awesome.
