HURRICANE SANDY

Hey guys,

I put out a call to folks I knew north of here for Hurricane Sandy experiences and photographs.

Here is a photo my college friend Rob took of his corner in Hoboken :

He is totally fine. His car is not.

My high school friend Samantha reported that her college room mate saw half her house fall into the water in Sayville, New York. Again, everybody involved is okay, but they lost a lot of their belongings, and, obviously, their house. So many people lost so much.

Check out this terrific story-in-photos about runners who were signed up to run the New York Marathon (cancelled due to damage and clean up for Hurricane Sandy). They are volunteering to deliver supplies to victims of the hurricane. Awesome!

Mrs. Talley, my high school English teacher (yes, that's right - I keep in touch with a former teacher. She was one of my all-time favorite teachers) sent me these pictures a friend shared with her of hurricane damage in the Outer Banks of NC:
Kitty Hawk

Rte 12

Buxton

Avalon Pier

Rte 12 Kitty Hawk

Jeanette's Pier

Here is an article about clean up in the Outer Banks following the hurricane:

My family and friends in Virginia and Maryland mostly saw lots of rain and wind, but that's about it. School was cancelled in some areas and some folks lost power, but nothing compared to the other areas.

Do you have any friends or family who were affected by the hurricane? If so, what was their experience and how are they doing now?

Looking for ways you can help? Here is a great link with resources:

  1. Hi it's Posey
It is so sad to see all of the pictures of all the flooded areas and I hope the people are all getting back into the normal habbit of things. None of my family members were affected by the storm that the news calls "the franken storm". i would like to be involved in the project of recovering.

    1. Hi Posey!
      Thanks for your response.
I think our Student Council is planning to start a project for Hurricane Sandy relief, if they haven't already. Maybe one of our Student Council reps can comment on that? We can all get involved that way. If you have some ideas, be sure to pass them along to Mrs. Gottschalk.

  2. HI it's Allie
I'm very sad about what the hurricane left behind for the people in NY, NJ, and the northern coast.
I heard people were without power for weeks and gasoline lines were miles long. Also there are still some people who lost everything. My aunt Joan lives in Wayne NJ and lost power for 3 days . I hope they raise a lot of money to help with the recovery.

I'm sorry your aunt lost power but I'm so glad that was all that happened for her and she is okay.
I agree, I hope a lot of money is raised to help out! We can help at school through the student council project!

  3. I hope that your college and high school friend are doing okay and the pictures look really bad. It looks like the runners had a good time volunteering.

Yes, my friends are all doing fine. They're very lucky, and only lost some belongings.
It DOES look like those runners had a good time volunteering. I think it is SO cool that they did that, don't you?

    2. I'm so glad you're starting to look back at my responses, Nathan. Thank you! Let's keep up that habit. It will be very, very useful in the weeks to come.
By the way, "Nathan is here" is not particularly useful when responding to the blog. Thank you.

  4. Hi Mrs. Taylor!!!! It's Raja. Hurricane Sandy was devastating according to all the news. The fierce winds and rain caused damage to some houses and other properties.. My Grandma, Aunt, Uncle, and other family that lives in New Jersey were affected, but their houses did not get damaged. Their power went out. They had to use a flashlight for 3 days. I really hope the fundraising for all the places that got affected by hurricane Sandy is successful. Maybe the wonderful students at The Downtown School can help!!!

      Thank you for your reply!
That is so true. Hurricane Sandy WAS devastating to so many areas - and several that don't normally see such damage from hurricanes.
I'm sorry to hear that your family lost power, but so glad that they were not hurt and their houses are fine. They are lucky indeed!
I am SURE The wonderful students at DTS will help out a great deal. We always do such a wonderful job fundraising for worthy causes.

  7. Hi its Raquel,
My dads friend Joe Bagel lives in New Jersey and was affected by Sandy but he is okay now and also my aunt Nancy lives in New York but luckily she didn't get very affected by Sandy. I hope that other people who got affected are okay. Hopefully we can start a fund raiser at school!

    1. Hi Raquel,
Thank you so much for your response. I'm glad to hear your family in New York and New Jersey are doing fine now. I'm sorry your dad's friend was affected, but it sounds like it turned out alright for him. That's good.
I agree that a school fundraiser is a terrific idea. I really liked Aidan's "Stuff the Bus" idea for sending up school supplies to affected schools. It sounds like Mrs. Gottschalk is going to try to get something like that underway for our student council. That would be terrific!

I'm glad that Anthony only lost power. It's good that he is doing alright!
It's terrible that people lost their lives in the hurricane, but it's certainly a good thing that more people weren't killed or injured. Many areas were evacuated before the hurricane hit - thank goodness for meteorology! We were able to see the hurricane coming and get people out of there!

  11. Hi drew here!

I'm really sad about what had happened in the north eastern US. I hope your friend from college is doing okay. Those people that were going to run in that marathon must be really nice for helping by delivering supplies to people who were affected by the hurricane.
