HURRICANES

Hi kiddos!

I know you have been studying hurricanes so far this year, and it sounds like you have been learning a lot - and teaching each other a lot, as well!

For this week's blog assignment, I have 2 links for you to visit, "Web Weather for Kids: Hurricanes" and and article called "Weird Weather" from Science News for Kids. I'd like for you to read both pages and then respond to the questions below. You can respond right here on the blog this week, rather than emailing me. If you have a question, you can email me at sylvan.taylor@gmail.com, but all answers go here this week.

Remember, please answer everything in complete sentences - that means a complete thought with correct capitalization and punctuation. Also know that, in some cases, your answer may be similar to someone else's answer. That's okay, as long as you put your own "spin" on it.

Here are the links to the 2 articles:

Science News for Kids: Weird Weather

Web Weather for Kids: Hurricanes

Here are your questions, to answer in complete sentences after you have read the 2 articles:

1. Do you think that the "weird weather" changes described in the Science News for Kids article would make hurricanes more or less likely? Why do you think this? Try to use details from both articles.

2. Name one fact you learned from an article that you did not already know.

3. Name one thing you learned in school last week about hurricanes that was not mentioned in the articles you just read.

4. Using what you have learned about hurricane names, give a suggestion for the name of the next hurricane to occur this hurricane season.
(If you aren't 100% sure you're up to date on the hurricane season so far, you can check out the Accuweather Hurricane Page to be sure you know what's up)

  1. Hi this is Raquel posting my answers for these blog questions.

    1. I think it would make hurricanes less likely because la nina makes the equator cold and hurricanes usually form on the equator and since the water is cold they can't form because they need warm water.
    2
.From the web weather article I didn't know that hurricanes help move heat from warm tropical places to the cooler temperate zone.
    3.
In class we learned that hurricane wind speeds can get up to 180 miles per hour!
    4. my name suggestion for this season, I'd probably pick the name hurricane Neal.

    1. Thank you, Raquel! Interesting thinking and very quick response!
I was hoping that someone would notice the fact that La Nina creates colder temperatures at the equator, because this does make the question a bit more interesting, doesn't it? It's a lot more complex than that, though, because that drop in temperature just seems to push the hotter temperatures somewhere else, and that can cause storms. Weather and climate are so fascinating!

  2. 1.I think less likely because now they know whats going on and they can try to provent it.

2.One fact from the article I didnt know is that hurricanes can be up to 600 miles across.

3.One thing I know that they didn't mention in the article is that hurricans start out as a tropicle depresion.

4.The next hurrican name to occer this season is Nadine or Kristy.

    1. Thanks for your reply, Nathan. A few questions for you: Is there anything we can do to prevent hurricanes? They are natural phenomena that are created by climate conditions. To my understanding, there's not anything we could do to change that. I'd be interested to find out if there actually is something scientists have found that can effect hurricanes. Let me know if you've found something about this!
I agree that a possible name is Nadine... I believe that's what they're calling the most recent hurricane, isn't it? But since hurricanes are named in ABC order, could the next one possibly be Kristy?

  4. hi its posey -Congratulations on your BABY!!!

#1 I think that the weird weather website is right about global warming effecting hurricanes because global warming is causing the Indian and west Pacific oceans to get warmer and warm water makes it more likely for hurricanes. Basicly I think that wierd weather is correct that hurricanes are more likely to happen.

#2 A thing I learned on the websites that I did not know was that their is a thing called a tropical disturbance before the tropical depression.

#3 A thing I knew that was not on the websites was that sometimes tornados form off of hurricanes that are on land.

#4 I am pretty sure that Michael is the next hurricane name.

  5. 1.I think that the very hot weather makes it more likely for hurricanes. Because hot weather equals warmer water and hurricanes need warm water to form and to stay alive.

2.One fact i learned was that hurricanes could be up to 600 miles across.

3.One thing i learned in school last week that was not mentioned in the articles was hurricanes start as tropical depressions turn into tropical storms and then form hurricanes.

4.My suggestion for the name of the next hurricane is hurricane Marline

  7. 1.The weird weather changes described in the science news for kids article would make hurricanes moe likely.Human activities release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere with warms the planet. According to the Hurricane article hurricanes happen when the oceans have been warmed during the summer months

2.One fact that I learned from the article that i did not know was that the La Nina helped trigger the drought in Africa

3.The thing that was not mentioned in the article is the hurricane categorys

4.I suggest the name Joyce for the next hurricane this season

    1. Thank you, RJ. Very nice answers, overall. One question, though: are you sure that the next hurricane (after September 9) could be named Joyce? Double-check the names up to that point and the method they use for naming hurricanes.

  8. 1.The weird weather changes would make huuracanes more likely because the carbon dioxide would warm the atmohsphere around it increaseing the hurracane chanse.
2.I did not know that carbon dioxide warms the air around it.
3.1 thing was that tornados form of hurracanes sometimes
    4.My suggestgen is neil

  9. Hi Mrs. Taylor!
Its Allie, Congratulations on your Baby!!!!!

#1 I think it would make it more likely for a hurricane because warm and dry weather usually makes the water warmer so a hurricane could form and get stronger.
#2 I learned that La Nina is when water in parts of the Pacific Ocean get cooler.
#3 One thing we learned in class that the article didn't mention is that there are different categories of a hurricane (ex. category 1,2,3,4,5).
#4 Since N is the next letter, I think the next hurricane should be named Natalie.

  10. 1. i think it would make hurricanes more likely because it causes warmer air and water and they need warm water and warm air to form
    2. I learned that hurricanes in the West Pacific are called typhoons.
    3. they can turn into tornados when they get to land because they don't have warm water anymore
    4. after Michael it should be Norbert

    1. Great answers, and great screen name, Aidan.

I also have to say that I really like the name Norbert for a hurricane. I see that they ended up choosing Nadine. I wonder if they have ever named a hurricane "Norbert." It sounds so harmless. You should check into that.
